On the way to teaching her first class of the semester, anthropologist Bronwyn Bloom notices a disturbing incident in a local park but doesn't intervene. When Bronwyn learns later that she was the only witness to the abduction of a young boy, she takes it upon herself to find the boy. Her obsessive search for the boy triggers deep memories of her own—Neanderthal—ancestor. Can these memories from 40,000 years ago help her to find the boy, and also help her to understand who she really is?

The author obviously put in quite a bit of work. I hate to give it a lower rating, but it just didn't really work for me.The premise was interesting. The author obviously tried to do some research to ground imagination in a solid context. It just didn't work for me. Sometimes, details can weave a world and pull you into the story. In this case, it felt more like a bunch of details thrown in to legitimize parts of the story (i.e. the author is familiar with Hoboken). I found the details just detracted from the story and I ended up glossing over big sections because I was bored. I found I couldn't even remember what book I was currently reading when I was about my day. I couldn't remember the title & had trouble remember the story and then it would eventually hit me - the archaeologist book. It felt like it took forever to get to the story and the story was pretty predictable. The flashbacks started out sort of interesting but then it just became too...pushed? It wasn't one that I stayed up way too late reading because I didn't want to put it down. It was only the last several chapters that I did because I just wanted it to resolve. And the resolution wasn't at all a surprise.
There were errors and implausible things. Much of it felt stilted or forced. The Author's Note at the end explains that the book had been set aside for years, so that might explain some of the lack of flow. Perhaps a fresh makeover would greatly improve it. I just didn't connect to the characters, the dialog wasn't always very natural, it just didn't draw me in. And I feel badly for saying that because it's obvious that the author really put some effort into the book. (The Author's Note at the end, in the author's natural voice, was a much better read. Perhaps being more true to your own style would help.)
It's not a bad book. I just didn't really enjoy it, nor would I recommend it.

NIGHTSONG A Neanderthal mystery eBook MJ Rhodes Reviews
The book had an interesting and well presented anthropological premise. She made it work and it seems as though the facts as related to the Neanderthals was based on quite a few references. I enjoyed the story in spite of the fact that I didn't expect much at the start. The ability of science to analyze a person's genetic heritage has opened up new areas and we might as well be seeing it in fiction, too. I'd like to see the characters continue on for awhile, I think. I liked the professor and found her Neanderthal extra abilities to be believable, since we don't know about those kind of differences, and probably we never will. I thought of giving five stars but I think a future book could be more in depth and I would love that, being a science nerd. I really really hate short superficial books, or long ones broken up into a series for which you pay more.
In "Nightsong A Neanderthal Mystery" M.J. Rhodes skillfully weaves two stories into one a mystery surrounding the abduction of a small boy in Hoboken, NJ, and a deeply personal quest to discover the protagonist's prehistoric ancestry in the remote mountains of Wales. How these two tales intertwine makes for a very entertaining and intriguing read.
Dr. Bronwyn Bloom, a paleo anthropologist specializing in the study of Neanderthals, is on a tenuous tenure track at NYU. On her walk to the PATH train for her morning commute from Hoboken, she observes something "off" at the playground she passes every day. It's not enough to alarm her, but it's enough to give her pause, pull out a scrap of paper, and jot down a partial license plate number. It's only later that she finds out the awful truth, one that would haunt her - she'd witnessed the abduction of a small boy.
Against the advice of friends, family, and the Hoboken detective assigned to the case, Bronwyn feels compelled to find the missing boy herself. Driven by a sense of guilt and responsibility - if only she had listened to her instincts at the time! - and frustrated by the police department's lack of progress plus the horrifying realization that they believe she might be involved, she begins her own investigation.
Following leads and her uncanny intuition, Bronwyn finds herself in a precarious situation which awakens in her a dream, a vision, memories (???) of a time and place tens of thousands of years ago. At the urging of her best friend, a colleague in the anthropology department who practices the shamanic arts, she agrees to a deep memory regression. What she learns about herself will change her life forever and tie together her prehistoric past with her search for the missing child in the present.
I love a good mystery, and for a short time in my life I was an anthropology major at Syracuse University. What are the odds two of my favorite interests would intersect? I am also a fan of stories with an interesting and quirky main character, and Dr. Bloom fits the bill and then some. I highly recommend this book and look forward to M.J. Rhode's next publication.
